Tate Modern Commission
11 October 2018 - 27 January 2019
I have recently had the rewarding experience of working with the Tate Modern in relation to their retrospective exhibition of works by Weaver Anni Albers (1899-1994). This was the first major exhibition of her Textiles in the UK and what an inspiring exhibition it was.
I worked with the three exhibition curators, Ann Coxon, Briony Fer and Pryiesh Mistry, in two capacities;
This commission required an exploration of hand weaving through design, material and structure, inspired by but not to replicate the works of weaver Anni Albers. I wanted these works to represent the professional abilities, skill and craftsmanship of contemporary hand weaving. As the accomplished works of Anni Albers in the exhibition could not be touched these new commissioned pieces were specifically to be handled by the public.
Since the commission I have been offered the opportunity of a 2 month Artist Residency at the Joseph & Anni Albers Foundation in Connecticut USA. I am looking forward to the experience.
